About CAC

Communication Across the Curriculum (CAC) is a faculty driven activity that began on the LSC-Montgomery campus in 1999 and is an extension of the fifty-year old national Writing Across the Curriculum initiative. CAC provides a forum for exchange of ideas, and sponsors three main activities during the school year:

 (1) The Wednesday afternoon Discussion Series. This is a regular forum on Wednesday afternoons for faculty and staff to discuss discipline-specific and cross-disciplinary research and ideas, teaching and curricular developments, as well as topical matters of importance in the profession. Presentations are informal and always include collegial discussion.   A Call for Presentation/Discussion Proposals is made each semester. All faculty and staff are invited. Both individual and panel discussions are welcome. The schedule of talks and panels for the semester is released at the beginning of each semester, and is available on the CAC web site. Announcements for each meeting are sent out electronically each week during the semester.

For additional information about the Wednesday series or CAC in general, contact Ron Heckelman (English).

 (2) The Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Journal of Student Writing.   This is an annual publication of student writing and (visual) presentations representing all parts of the college, including both academic and workforce.   The journal accommodates both print and visual forms of communication (PowerPoints, posters and other graphic representations), understanding the concept of “writing” in the broadest rhetorical sense.  The journal is organized by discipline or field as well as by genre of communication. A great variety of writing–formal and informal–are published in the journal. Instructors submit the writing of their students for consideration. The Call for Submissions, due date and other particulars can be found at the beginning of each edition.  Electronic versions of the most recent editions of the journal are available on the CAC web site, as are the submission form, student release and journal style guide.

For additional information about the journal, contact the faculty editors, Martina Kusi-Mensah (English), Ron Heckelman (English), and Julie Harless (Biology).

(3) The Annual Student Presentation Conference.  This occurs in the spring and celebrates outstanding student work in all forms from around the college.  The conference is organized in “professional-style,” with 10 minute presentations followed by Q/A.  Instructors submit student work for consideration by the conference organizers. A Call for Presentations goes out each semester for the spring conference. The submission form for conference presentations is available on the CAC web site. Note: This form is different from the journal submission form.

For additional information about the conference, contact the faculty organizers, Missy Denis (English), Roy Turner (English) and Mark Whitten (Philosophy).
